October 26, 1896 — May 26, 1974
Susie Cox was born on October 26, 1896, in the Kennesaw area. Her parents were Albert and Susan Cox and she had three brothers and four sisters. Susie was married to E.C. Stegall on July 17, 1919. She was a music teacher for about fifty years and would have as many as 25 individual students at a time.
Susie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Kennesaw and played the piano at the church for many years. For at least forty years she arranged to have the flowers placed on the alter each week. Most of the flowers were grown in her own yard.
Susie always took the time to grow vegetables in her garden. She kept a few for herself and then shared the rest with people in the community. Susie was also a correspondent for the Marietta Daily Journal for about 40 years. She would write about the local happenings in Kennesaw.
According to the October 21st, 1964 Marietta Daily Journal, Susie was very modest. She once said, “I have never done anything outstanding in my life.” The people of Kennesaw disagreed and considered her a very important part of the town. On October 25, 1964, they held “Susie Stegall Appreciation Day” in the Council Room at City Hall. Susie passed away on May 26, 1974.
